New Synagogue (inaugurated on November 30, 1937)
synagogue designed by architect Abraham Elzas. (1907-1945)
The Lekstraat Synagogue has the style of the New Objectivity: a sleek building with a light interior. In 2002, the building was designated as a national monument. The building has also served as a resistance museum. Currently, the auction house Glerum is located there. There are plans to restore the building to its original state.
On Tuesday, November 30, 1937, the new synagogue was inaugurated at eight o'clock in the evening.
On the outer wall, a text in Hebrew has been inscribed: 'Then I will dwell among the children of Israel and will not forsake the people of Israel.'
Chief Rabbi Sarlouis of the Dutch Israelite Main Synagogue leads the service. He speaks of Amsterdam as 'the city where there is no religious hatred and where there will never be religious hatred.'
