Genemuiden

Description

In 1275 Genemuiden received city rights from John of Nassau. Bishop Jan van Arkel granted the city the ferry right across the Black Water for an annual supply of sixty pounds of wax for making candles. In 1382 they acquired the right to hold three annual fairs. The place became rich and built a beautiful town hall. Until 2001 Genemuiden was an independent municipality. After that it merged with Hasselt and Zwartsluis into the municipality of Zwartewaterland.

In the 17th and 18th centuries, the making of rush mats became an important source of income for the city. At the beginning of the 20th century, people switched to the production of coconut mats. From this, the carpet industry developed in Genemuiden, which nowadays produces more than half of all Dutch wool and nylon floor coverings.

Today, Genemuiden is the hometown of so-called artificial grass. After several years of making artificial grass for hockey fields, the largest carpet manufacturer is now also busy with the production of artificial grass for football fields. The KNVB allows the use of artificial grass on fields of amateur clubs. The local football pride SC Genemuiden has been playing its matches on (locally produced) artificial grass for several years now.
