Neerijnen goes back to the fourteenth century. Together with Waardenburg Castle, a short distance away, this castle belonged to one of the houses of the De Cock family. The old, now no longer existing house Neerijnen, either Klingelenburg or Clinenburg, was built around 1350 by Gijsbrecht de Cock. Neerijnen and Waardenburg inherited from the Van Pallandt family in the nineteenth century. In 1971 the last Baroness van Pallandt van Neerijnen en Waardenburg died, after which the property passed to her cousin Jhr. C.L.H. van Vredenburch. He sold the estate in 1974 to the 'Stichting Het Gelders Landschap' and in 1975 transferred Waardenburg Castle in long-term leasehold to the sister institution, the 'Stichting Gelderse Kasteelen.' The Neerijnen house was later purchased by the municipality of Neerijnen, which converted it into a town hall after a thorough restoration. The present house Neerijnen was built around 1600, probably on the foundations of the old house. It underwent major renovations in the eighteenth century and was added in the second half of the nineteenth century. Very beautiful is the entrance part with a rococotrant frame crowned by a coat of arms, held by a unicorn (right) and a reclining lion (left) and in which, quartered, are the arms of Tjaard van Aylva and Margaretha van Gendt.
