Fort Spion is a fort that was part of the New Dutch Water Line. This defensive line was built between 1815 and 1885 and functioned - with the necessary adjustments - until 1940 as one of the main defense lines of our country. The New Dutch Water Line was located between the Zuiderzee and the Biesbosch and included 68 defences, hundreds of concrete works and a considerable inundation area. This inundation area, which could be submerged, would stop enemy forces. Before the start of the Second World War, the fort was reinforced by a heavy concrete casemate. This served to close the road Loosdrecht to Loenen. Fort Spion is a so-called 'dike access post' because the fort is located on a narrow passage in a flooded area. Today, Fort Spion is set up as a small simple campsite.
