Residential house of Frits van Egter (The Evenings)

At number 415 is the former residence of Gerard van het Reve. Gerard van het Reve lived here with his parents from 1938 to 1948 and wrote 'The Evenings' there. The book describes the last ten days of 1946 from the perspective of the 23-year-old office clerk Frits van Egters. Number 415 (then still number 116) served as a model for the house in which 'The Evenings' takes place, called Schilderskade 66 in the book. Despite great appreciation for the talent of the young writer, Godfried Bomans described the book as 'so grim, so devoid of any positivity, so bleak, so cynical and utterly negative.' Simon Vestdijk and other critics recognized in the work the voice of a generation that emerged from the war numbed and without faith.
