The biggest eye-catcher of Sluis is the town hall, which is the only one in the Netherlands to have a belfry, a fortified tower with four corner turrets. The town hall was built in 1390 as a symbol of urban freedom, following the example of the belfries in Ghent and Bruges. In 1944 the building suffered heavy damage and was rebuilt in 1956. The council chamber is closed off by an 18th-century wrought iron gate that comes from the town hall of Middelburg. Along the walls are paintings and a tapestry (1650). The tower (142 steps) offers a panoramic view over the Zeeland landscape.
