Right in the beating heart of the city of Sluis stands the only Belfry in the Netherlands, which was possibly started in 1386. The building of belfries is a Belgian and Northern French tradition.
Monthly, the municipal council meets here, and concerts, lectures, and exhibitions are organized. In the council chamber on the ground floor, you can see the richly decorated vierschaar gate and a series of coats of arms of rulers and/or institutions that were important for Sluis.
The Council Cellar is set up for temporary exhibitions of visual art. On the second floor of the Belfry, you will become acquainted with the story of the founding of the city of Sluis and its economic heyday under the Burgundian dukes. The Belfry tower is part of the Belfry Museum and offers a beautiful view over Sluis and the surrounding area. On the third floor of the Belfry, one of the most famous residents of Sluis is central: the schoolmaster Johan Hendrik van Dale. This museum floor focuses on everything Van Dale was involved with in his life.
