The square was established in the early 1920s as a pivot in Hendrik Petrus Berlage's Plan Zuid. At this location, the three main streets converged in a Y-shape. From the west, the Noorder Amstellaan and the Zuider Amstellaan ended at the square; from the east came the Amstellaan. The names correspond to the waterways Noorder Amstelkanaal, Zuider Amstelkanaal, and Amstelkanaal, just north of the square. It was named Daniël Willinkplein by a council decision on February 23, 1922, after the poet Daniël Willink, known for Amstellandsche Arkadia and other writings about the beauty of the city. Surrounding this central square, the Rivierenbuurt was developed.
