The striking lift bridge at the Gouwesluis over the Gouwe was built in the late 1930s. The Gouwe was widened to improve the shipping connection between Amsterdam and Rotterdam. Similar bridges were built in Boskoop and Waddinxveen. During World War II, explosives were placed at the bridge to blow it up if necessary, which turned out to be unnecessary. However, one of the charges did explode due to a lightning strike. In the 1970s, the bridge was severely damaged again in a collision with a crane truck that was 1 meter too tall.
