old wooden dike houses in Buiksloot.
Buiksloot was an independent municipality and village in the . The old village center lies along the Buiksloterdijk, that is: on the Northern IJdijk between Nieuwendam and Oostzaan. The church is slightly lower behind the dike.
On January 1, 1921, Buiksloot, together with the municipalities of Nieuwendam, Ransdorp, Sloten, and Watergraafsmeer, merged into the municipality of Amsterdam. The municipality was severely impoverished after the flood disaster of 1916, when a large area north of Amsterdam was flooded. After the annexation, the village became part of a so-called Garden Village in the Amsterdam-Noord district. In the 1960s and 1970s, the new residential area Banne Buiksloot was built to the north of the village.
