The Bergse Voorplas is one of the two peat ponds known as the Bergse Plassen. The ponds were created through peat extraction in the 17th and 18th centuries. Between the Voor- and Achterplas is a narrow strip with the medieval connecting road between Rotterdam and Hillegersberg, the Straatweg. The ponds are connected by a short canal. They serve as a buffer water for the surrounding polders. The water is partially pumped via the river Rotte to the Nieuwe Maas. There are two water mills located at Prinsenmolenpad and Terbregse Rechter Rottekade for this purpose.
