The Noordenbergtoren was a barbican in the Dutch city of Deventer. The tower was located to the northwest of the city center between the inner and outer moat. The tower was built around 1487 and served to protect the city from external attacks. Specifically, it defended the sluice that regulated the water level in the inner moat. The water for this flowed via the Schipbeek and the IJssel into the moat on the eastern side and emptied back into the IJssel on the northwestern side of the city. To prevent the moat from drying out when the water levels of the rivers were low, the sluice regulated the amount of water that was discharged.
