Sonsbeek Park in Arnhem is the most famous park in this city. The park is named after Anna van Sonsbeeck, a prominent 'Lady' in the Arnhem community in the 17th century. Anna's father, Franciscus van Sonsbeeck, hails from the small German town of Sonsbeck or Sonsbeeck. Above the main entrance of the Lutheran church built in 1655 in Sonsbeeck, one can still find the city coat of arms: a sun with some wavy lines underneath representing a brook. The park covers 67 hectares and borders the parks Zijpendaal and Gulden Bodem to the north. These three parks are closely connected and together they cover about 200 hectares. To the east, Sonsbeek borders the neighborhoods Sonsbeekkwartier and St. Marten, to the south it almost borders the city center, and to the west it borders the Burgemeesterswijk. The area is a protected urban landscape.
