The lock chamber between Spankeren and Dieren was the place where the inhabitants of Dieren and the Allies together celebrated the retreat of the last Germans. Brencarriers loaded with cheering youths rolled over the emergency bridge that had been built by the local population. This cleared the way to the Veluwe, which was liberated in the days that followed.
