High Hill, Maze
The Maze is a small wooded area on the southeastern slope of the High Hill, west of Oudeschild.
The history of the forest dates back to 1764 when commissioner and clerk Cornelis Roepel purchased a piece of land of 17 ares on the High Hill. From here, there has always been a stunning view of the Texas Bay. Moreover, there is also a small hill in the area. It is said on Texel that a large boulder, the English stone, is hidden there. The boulder is called the English Stone because it supposedly extends all the way under the North Sea to England. The hill can be climbed via seven steps: "the seven pancakes." Roepel created a beautiful estate with a star forest and a walking path. In 1784, it was sold to Mr. Kikkert. He established a tavern and constructed a small Maze. In 1840, the forest came into the possession of the municipality of Texel. At that time, it became a popular area for excursions, and it remained so.
The maze disappeared and turned into a forest. On Pentecost, it is Bossiesday. Then the youth of Texel goes to the Maze. This custom was revived by the churches of Den Burg at the end of the twentieth century.
