The Noordhoekkerk or Heilig Hartkerk was the location of the body of the unsolved murder case of 11-year-old Marietje Kessels. Here, on a warm August day in the year 1900, her lifeless, mutilated and raped body was found. The church was demolished in 1975, so you won't find it now. In 2011, Marietje Kessels' niece, Godelieve Kessels, wrote a book about the mystery. In the book 'The murder of Marietje Kessels' she points to the pastor George of Zinnicq Bergmann as the perpetrator. Marietje Kessels had always heard from her father that it was him, but it was never proven. Kessels also does not provide conclusive evidence in her book, which she believes is not possible because the evidence lies in the cemetery. According to her father, a few years after the murder, a carriage with two Vatican delegates stopped at the door. They would have admitted that the pastor was the perpetrator, but imposed a gag order on Marietje's parents because otherwise they would never be able to visit a Catholic in their musical instruments business. There are no witnesses to this statement either and Marietje's murder remains a mystery.
