Schiermonnikoog is the fifth inhabited Dutch Wadden Island when counted from the west and belongs to the province of Friesland. The entire island falls under one municipality, which bears the same name. With only 942 residents, it is the smallest municipality in the Netherlands in terms of population. The municipality mainly thrives on tourism. The island is praised for its tranquility, which is partly maintained because visitors must leave their cars on the mainland.
