The Round Mill in Maasbommel (municipality of West Maas en Waal) is a round stone windmill that was built in or before 1740 as a ground sailer. The mill was stripped of its blades in the 1920s because they hindered traffic on the dike. In the hull the milling operation was continued until about 1967 with the help of a diesel engine. In 2010 a start was made with the restoration of the mill, but now as a scaffolding mill. The Round Mill will grind grain on a voluntary basis, but will also serve as a visitor and information centre for the Regional Tourist Office. The rebuilding of the mill is subsidized by the European Community. [1] The mill was unique as a ground sailer in that, in addition to three pairs of grinding stones, it also had a complete peeling system with two stones. All the stones were located on or under the first attic. The situation is still recognizable even after the reconstruction and elevation.
