Rheden

Rheden is a place in the municipality of Rheden in the Dutch province of Gelderland. The number of inhabitants in 2021 was 7,685. The name Rheden comes from Rheton, which is explained as "place where the reeds grow". The name Rheton is first mentioned in a document from King Otto I dated August 28, 960. This document states that Otto I donates several farms located on the Veluwe to the St. Mauritius Monastery in Magdeburg. A farm is understood to be a piece of land about 32 to 40 morgens in size. One of these farms is located in the hamlet of Rheden in the district of Hamalant in the county of Count Wichman, founder of the abbey in Elten in 967. In the language of the document, this is described as follows: "In villa Rheton nominate mansum I, hoc est situm in pago vocato Hamalant in comitatu Wichmanni". A farm encompasses a quantity of land needed for a proper farming business. This donation would likely have led to the establishment of the village of Rheden. It is not possible to trace exactly where the land that originated the village was located. The village is referred to in 1059 as Rethen. In the 12th and 13th centuries, the name of the village is also written as Rethe, Rhede, Rede, and Reden.
