From 1100 onwards, Mierlo was a seigneury where the lords of Mierlo already grew cherries, as the Romans did before them. The humus-rich permeable sandy soil in Mierlo is very suitable for this. In 1928, the pomologist Rietsema described the MIERLOSE BLACK CHERRY as a separate species. From 1948 to 1970, cherry harvest festivals were held here in Mierlo with an annual "Cherry Queen". During these festivals, the village attracted 60,000 visitors a year. In recent years, the local IVN department and the municipality have been working to bring the cherry tree back into the streets. The old, but also the new orchards are a beauty to see during flowering.
