Mierlo è stata a partire dal 1100 un feudo dove i signori di Mierlo coltivavano ciliegie, proprio come facevano i romani prima di loro. Il terreno sabbioso ricco di humus e ben drenato di Mierlo è molto adatto a questo scopo. Il pomologo Rietsema ha descritto nel 1928 la CILIEGIA NERA DI MIERLO come una varietà a sé stante. Dal 1948 al 1970 qui a Mierlo si tenevano festival di raccolta delle ciliegie con una "Regina delle Ciliegie" annuale. Durante questi festeggiamenti il villaggio attirava 60.000 visitatori all'anno. Negli ultimi anni il locale capitolo IVN e il comune si sono impegnati a riportare l'albero di ciliegio nel panorama urbano. I vecchi, ma anche i nuovi frutteti fioriti sono uno spettacolo da vedere.
