Oudezijl is a hamlet and a former harbor village in the municipality of Oldambt, Groningen province. It is adjacent to Bad Nieuweschans, separated by the water of the Westerwoldse Aa and used to belong to the parish of Nieuw-Beerta. The name of the place refers to the Oudezijl or Tienkarspelenzijl that was built here in 1670. After the Nieuwe or Langeakkerschans was constructed in 1628, there was a need for a lock to be able to flood the surrounding farmland in case of emergency. Initially, a lock was built in the new sea dike, in the Westerwoldse Aa: the Aa-zijl. In addition, a canal was dug where a second lock was placed. Both locks were washed away in 1669 during a storm.
