A bloody battle was fought near the village of Sint Pancras (1256). At the Battle of Vronen, the West Frisians in Vronen were completely destroyed and in revenge the Dutch burned down the entire West Frisian village. Many of the Vroners – men, women and children – were horribly mutilated and murdered, and the rest were exiled. There is nothing left of Vronen. Almost 700 years later, the village of Sint Pancras is located on the same spot and an unsuspecting resident makes a gruesome discovery in the garden: four human skeletons. Archaeologists turn out en masse and find 132 graves. They turn out to be residents of Vronen. From the bones they read that the villagers must have had a hard life. Many had joint diseases such as osteoarthritis or congenital skeletal defects and no fewer than 103 skeletons were diagnosed with infectious diseases such as leprosy and malaria.
