The village originated in the late Middle Ages, on the border of the Land of Weert and the countship of Horn. Presumably in the 15th century, a chapel was built there, dedicated to Saint Barbara. In 1617, this chapel was elevated to a parish church. Godefridus Guyten was appointed as the first pastor.
The current Saint Barbara Church was built in the years after World War II and is a design by architect Jos Wielders, who also designed the predecessor from 1923 that was destroyed in 1944.
