Borgercompagnie is a characteristic peat colonial ribbon village in the province of Groningen in the Netherlands. The village of Borgercompagnie lies in three municipalities of Groningen: Hoogezand-Sappemeer, Menterwolde, and Veendam. Borgercompagnie originated in the 17th century when citizens from the city of Groningen established a peat colony here. In 1647, the deep (Groningen dialect: daip = canal) was excavated. In 1655, the peat manor "Welgelegen" was built. After the peat extraction, the Borgercompagniesterdiep was not properly maintained until it became unnavigable around 1880. Therefore, in that year, a special water board was established, named Canal Water Board for Borger and Tripscompagnie, for the maintenance of sluices, bridges, and canalside properties. Along the original deep, farms and houses are located on both sides. The numbering starts at 1 in Sappemeer (Borgercompagnie-North) and goes up to over 250 in the former Wildervank (Borgercompagnie-South). Just before the intersection with Veendammerweg, there is an extension on the odd side towards Langeleegte. The middle section of the deep was filled in during the 1970s. After reconstruction in the course of the 1990s, a road was created with more than 20 obstacles in the form of eyes and narrowings.
