Randwijk

Randwijk is a village in the Dutch municipality of Overbetuwe, located west of Heteren and north of Indoornik in the province of Gelderland. On January 1, 2021, Randwijk had 1,460 inhabitants. Randwijk has a rich history, dating back to Roman times. The current Randwijk was located at the northern border of the Roman Empire along the limes. There is evidence that the Romans built a castellum in Randwijk. According to archaeologists, there should be another castellum between the reconstructed Roman forts in Arnhem-Meinerswijk and Fectio. The most logical place is Randwijk, as it is strategically situated opposite two river valleys in the Veluwe. At the current Lexkesveer, there was a crossing during Roman times between an important north-south route and the limes road. The location is also exactly halfway between the castella in Kesteren and Arnhem. At the time when the Rhine still meandered freely, there was a ford here, which must have become deeper over time. This aligns with the climate change described by the Romans: it has become increasingly wetter in the Betuwe over the centuries. From the Middle Ages onwards, there is no mention of a 'ford' or 'forade'.
