In 1913 it was built as an eight-class middle aisle school with Art Nouveau and chalet style elements. With an adjacent teacher's house. In 1975, the city council of De Wijk decided to build a new school behind the old school and on the Briëtweg. This school has since been demolished and the supermarket is now located there.

De Wijk originated in the Middle Ages, when farmers settled in the dry places in the peat bogs along the Reest. In 1325 the monastery of Ruinen was moved to Dickninge and this had a great influence on the development of the village. The havezaten de Havixhorst and Dunningen have also been important in this respect. In 1672, hostile marauding troops destroyed everything around the Havixhorst and the monastery church of Dickninge was demolished. The Dickninger mill also went up in flames. Until 1750, the Kerspel De Wijk grew through mining, and the cattle herd grew with it. In 1811, in the French period, a reorganization was introduced and the municipality of De Wijk was created, which also included Koekange, Oshaar, de Schiphorst and de Stapel. Especially after the Second World War, the village was greatly expanded by new construction.
