While the missionary Liudger was in West Saxony, in 794 Count Wrachar te Brummen gave him a piece of land on the IJssel between Baak and Wichmond. In this donation, Wichmond is mentioned for the first time in a document as Withmundi. The population began to build a church around 800, which was blessed in 801 by Liudger the Salvator. The missionary soon left the village to devote himself to his newly founded abbey of Werden.
