Stellendam is a relatively young village; the polder in which it is located was only drained in the 18th century. However, around 1220, there was an island near the current location of Stellendam, called Zomerland.
The name Stellendam comes from "stelle," an elevation built outside the dikes that served as a refuge for a shepherd who grazed his sheep outside the dikes.
Stellendam is the home port of an extensive fishing fleet (± 50 trawlers).
