Stellendam è un villaggio relativamente giovane; il polder in cui si trova è stato bonificato solo nel XVIII secolo. Tuttavia, intorno al 1220, nei pressi dell'attuale posizione di Stellendam, c'era un'isola chiamata Zomerland.
Il nome Stellendam deriva da "stelle", un'altezza artificiale eretta al di fuori delle dighe che serviva da rifugio per un pastore che pascolava le sue pecore al di fuori delle dighe.
Stellendam è il porto natale di una vasta flotta peschereccia (circa 50 pescherecci).
