Stellendam es una aldea relativamente joven; el polder en el que se encuentra fue drenado solo en el siglo XVIII. Sin embargo, alrededor de 1220, cerca de la ubicación actual de Stellendam, había una isla llamada Zomerland.
El nombre Stellendam proviene de "stelle", una altura levantada en la orilla que servía como refugio para un pastor que pastoreaba sus ovejas fuera de los diques.
Stellendam es el puerto de origen de una extensa flota de pesca (aproximadamente 50 cotters).
