Westerwijtwerd is a small village directly south of Middelstum in the municipality of Eemsdelta in the province of Groningen. It had 85 inhabitants in 2021. The Westerwijtwerdermaar flows alongside the village. The village is dominated by the 13th-century church of Westerwijtwerd and the 19th-century grain and peeling mill Zeldenrust. The village had one of the last 'living room cafes' in the Netherlands from 1959 to 2010: café Hazekamp. This was located in a building from around 1880, where a blacksmith had been established for a long time who also managed a café. In 1959, it came into the hands of Tinus Hazekamp, who also became the bridge keeper and at the same time took over the mill from his father. In 1986 he handed over the mill, and he passed away in 2010. The café was continued in 2011 by the new owners.
