Kommerzijl, until the end of the 17th century called Opslachterzijl, is a dike village in the municipality of Westerkwartier in the Dutch province of Groningen, located along the Kommerzijlsterdiep, which continues as Kommerzijlsterriet after the village and flows into the Reitdiep. To the west of the village lies the Ruigewaard and to the east the Humsterland. Kommerzijl has 505 inhabitants. The Groningen nickname for the inhabitants is Spierens, possibly because they were once considered very thin.
