The village of Sint Geertruid is named after the saint Gertrude of Nijvel. March 17 is the feast day of Saint Gertrude, after whom this village chapel is named. In 640, her mother founded the abbey of Nijvel, where Gertrude entered and became abbess at the age of 20. Her feast is now celebrated on her death date March 17 659. She died when she was only 33 years old. Gertrude is often depicted with one or more of the following attributes: an abbey church, a penitential garment, a staff, a drinking cup, mice, and a cat. She is most famous for the latter as she is the patron saint of cats.
