Around 1860, a ground sailer was built at the current location of the mill, which was replaced in 1958 by the current tower mill at the request of the miller's family Gunnewick. The mill was constructed by the well-known millwright J.D. Medendorp from Zuidlaren. For this, parts from several demolished mills were used. It is noteworthy that this mill, unlike most octagonal tower mills, has a very substantial square base. The mill is entirely set up for professional milling operations and still operates as such. Most likely, De Vier Winden is the last mill in the Netherlands built for economic reasons.
