Here in Halfweg, the towpath between Haarlem and Leiden began. In 1656, the first pole was driven in, marking the start of a long history of towing on this route. With horse-drawn barges, a schedule was maintained between Haarlem and Leiden, enabling fast and reliable transport of people and mail. The estates along the route also benefited from this.
