Here was once 'Keukenduin', the area where vegetables were grown and the game was hunted that went to the kitchens of Castle Teylingen. After Castle Teylingen was destroyed by the Spaniards, a country house was built here in 1640, which was named Keukenhof. The house was further expanded with towers and various gardens, including an extensive kitchen garden. More and more land was purchased, the house was converted into a castle, and thus the estate of Keukenhof was created. In the middle of the 19th century, Frederik's Hof was added, a playhouse for the son of the house.
