This polder mill from 1641 has drained the Broekzijdse polder for centuries, located opposite the Oostzijdse polder. These polders were just two of the 11 polders that made up the land of Abcoude at the end of the 16th century. This large number was a consequence of the early reclamation of this area, which resulted in irregular parceling and fragmented ownership. Over time, the organization around the reclamation improved. Areas that were reclaimed later consisted of large, organized blocks, each with its own drainage. Around 1650, a large number of polders merged to address increasing water nuisance. With more resources now available, larger mills could be built. The banks around the new polders were raised and new ditches were dug towards the new mills. This is also the case with the Broekzijdse mill. The former Broekzijdse polder is notably low in relation to the river. The height difference here is as much as two meters.
