In 1498, the people of Vught received certain privileges (exemption from toll and market rights) in exchange for the obligation to hang and display those sentenced to death in Den Bosch. They did this on the Vught Heath. They fulfilled this role until 1795, which earned them the nicknames 'Gallows Lighters' and 'Lear Lighters'.
