Ceramic Center

The Centre Céramique is a multifunctional building in Maastricht in the district of Céramique, located at the corner of Plein 1992 and Avenue Céramique. The building was designed by Jo Coenen and houses, among other things, the city library of Maastricht and various exhibition spaces.

The City Library Maastricht dates back to the year 1662, when a space was set up as a library in the new town hall of Maastricht. In 1773, this library had 3,500 volumes. In the 19th century, the library and the city archives were located in the Old Minorite Monastery on Sint Pieterstraat, and from 1915 in the Generaalshuis at Vrijthof. Part of the collection was stored in the Dominican Church due to a lack of space. In 1971, the City Library merged with the Public Library on Witmakersstraat, and a year later with the Central Library in Beyart. At that time, the library collection consisted of over 450,000 items. In 1977, the City Library moved to Nieuwenhofstraat, the current city center location of the Maastricht University Library. Finally, in 1999, the current building on Avenue Céramique and Plein 1992 was occupied.
