Round Lutheran Church

The Round Lutheran Church or New Lutheran Church is a former Lutheran church on the Singel in Amsterdam. Since 1975, this monument, which has been repeatedly destroyed by fire, serves as a venue for large gatherings at a hotel.

The Round Lutheran Church was built between 1668 and 1671 as the second and thus "new" Lutheran Church, after the Old Lutheran Church had become too small due to the many Lutheran immigrants. The architect was Adriaan Dortsman. Because the Lutherans were prohibited from building a church tower, they constructed a domed church. In the small tower on the dome, called a lantern, the Lutheran swan was depicted.

The Lutherans left the church in 1935. After its closure, it was used for concerts. There was also a period during which a tent show/sail-making business was established there. In 1975, the church was taken into use by the opposite Sonesta Hotel. An underground tunnel was built, allowing hotel guests to access the hall, which now serves as a conference and concert hall. The organ underwent a thorough restoration in 1984. The Renaissance Amsterdam Hotel now operates the church. It is used as a venue for various events, ranging from meetings to weddings, live television shows, and gala dinners.

Less than 10 years after the organ restoration of 1984, the dome caught fire again. On February 3, 1993, the interior and roof of the Dome Hall were destroyed. The extensive restoration that followed took 16 months, and by June 1994, the Dome was restored. However, the copper roof was now copper-colored instead of green.
