Ancient oaks and beeches know the history of the Baarnse Forest. In 1654, the estate with the house was offered as a dowry to a son of a German merchant and his bride, the daughter of a mayor from Amsterdam. A grandchild of the couple, Willem Gideon Deutz, transformed it in the 18th century with wide avenues and romantic ponds into a true country estate. Virtually all estates were adapted a century later in the English landscape style. The Baarnse Forest was no exception; everything was meant to create a ‘natural’ impression. Much of that 18th-century park forest has been preserved, such as the pond and the path with the beeches.
