Castle De Nijenbeek, also known as Nijenbeek Castle, dates back to the thirteenth century and is located on an old bed of the IJssel river northeast of the village of Voorst. The castle was founded to control the shipping traffic on the river.
The current tower, or what remains of it, still gives a good impression of what a medieval donjon might have looked like. The tower consists of heavy masonry, which has not only suffered greatly over the centuries but has also incurred damage in the twentieth century. Due to a lack of maintenance and especially due to war violence in the last world war, the castle has suffered so much that the ruin is no longer allowed to be entered due to the risk of collapse.
The ruin is part of the De Poll estate. After the province has promised a substantial subsidy for restoration, the ruin was consolidated in 2015 on behalf of the managers of the De Poll estate. Consolidating the ruin means maintaining it in its current state and ensuring that further decay does not occur.
