Betuwe Line and De Spees

A remnant of the extended Grebbe Line in the Betuwe bears the wounded name "De Spees". Near the former farm 'De Spees', a fortified line dike connected to the Rijndijk. Spees comes from the skewer-shaped plot, which was formed by the connection of the Rijnbandijk and the Marsdijk. The fortification dates from the year 1799 and was built under French supervision. The hornwork was intended to stop the enemy, who was likely to approach over the dike. The area in front of De Spees was too high to be flooded, so the defense of this place received extra attention.
There is also a replica of a Roman watchtower at Fort De Spees. Although the fidelity to nature is still something to be discussed, it is a fun play object for children. The fort itself is a monument in the context of the Grebbe Line.
