Un residuo della prolungata Grebbelinie nella Betuwe porta il meraviglioso nome "De Spees". Vicino alla casa colonica dell'epoca 'De Spees' si collegava una diga di linea fortificata alla diga del Reno. Spees deriva dal terreno a forma di spiedo, formato dalla giunzione della diga di Rijnbandijk e della diga di Marsdijk. La fortificazione risale all'anno 1799 ed è stata realizzata sotto la supervisione francese. Il hornwerk era destinato a fermare il nemico, che probabilmente si sarebbe avvicinato attraverso la diga. L'area di De Spees era troppo alta per essere allagata, quindi la difesa di questo luogo ricevette attenzione extra.
Sulla fortezza De Spees si trova anche una replica di una torre di avvistamento romana. Anche se sulla fedeltà naturalistica si possono muovere alcune critiche, è comunque un divertente oggetto di gioco per i bambini. La fortezza stessa è un monumento nel contesto della Grebbelinie.
