Memorial pin

Description

When the advancing French armies crossed the frozen rivers in the winter of 1795, Stadtholder William V had to decide to leave the country. He fled on January 18, 1795, with his two sons from Scheveningen to England. This flight marked the end of the Republic of the United Seven Provinces and the stadtholders of Orange. William V died in exile.

After Napoleon's defeat at the Battle of Leipzig in 1813, the son of William V returned to the Netherlands. He landed on November 30, 1813, near this spot on the beach of Scheveningen. Two years later, he became King William I, the beginning of the Kingdom of the Netherlands.

In memory of the historic landing, this approximately 14.5 m high memorial needle was erected in 1865.
