Huis ten Bosch Palace

Huis ten Bosch Palace in The Hague is the residential palace of King Willem-Alexander and his family. It was built in the middle of the seventeenth century by order of Prince Frederick Henry of Orange and his wife Amalia van Solms and expanded in the first half of the eighteenth century by Prince William IV of Orange-Nassau. The Orange Hall is famous for its many monumental paintings. The palace, which is the residence of the King of the Netherlands, is also used as such for part of its representative functions. Huis ten Bosch Palace is located in the Haagse Bos and is owned by the State of the Netherlands. It has a floor area of 8,785 m² and is located on a plot of sixteen hectares. The state is responsible for the architectural condition, upholstery and furnishing. Huis ten Bosch belongs to the Top 100 of the Rijksdienst voor de Monumentenzorg.

Huis ten Bosch was built in the middle of the 17th century as a summer residence. This was done on the initiative of Amalia van Solms, who had expressed to her husband Prince Frederik Hendrik of Orange the wish for a summer residence near The Hague. On May 17, 1645, the land, eighteen mornings and 470 rods, was handed over to her free of charge. The agreement was concluded by the Chamber of Accounts of the Countship of Holland, after consultation with Prince Frederik Hendrik. It was donated "to change her recreation, exercise and oeffeninge so into plantage as paneling, so sij selve t'haerder vermaeck useful soude found". The area consisted of "elst-ackers, weye, valleye and wilderness" and was actually a sandy, pebbly-like strip of ditches. Before the construction work, it had to be raised and for drainage it had to be surrounded by a moat.
