The lighthouse of Marken, now a national monument, stands at the eastern tip of the island. It was built in 1839 to a design by architect J. Valk and soon received the nickname "The Horse of Marken." Since 1700, a square beacon had stood on the same spot. In later periods, buildings were added, giving the tower its characteristic shape. In 1814, the tower received a fog bell and in 1839 the round tower was built on the foundation of the beacon. In 1919, the fog bell was replaced by a foghorn.
Regularly, the lighthouse suffers from drifting ice in winter, which creates a more than spectacular sight. In 1971, this was so bad that the tower was pushed a few centimeters from its place. Currently, the lighthouse is inhabited.
