From the viaduct, you have a view of the short Afsluitdijk, which is 2675 meters long. This dike was the first section of the total Zuiderzee works and ensured that Wieringen was no longer an island since 1924.
In fact, the Amsteldiepdijk is part of the Afsluitdijk, which closes off the former Zuiderzee and connects North Holland and Friesland. That is why the Amsteldiepdijk is also referred to as the Little Afsluitdijk or Short Afsluitdijk. The construction of the Amsteldiepdijk was also a demonstration project for the large Afsluitdijk. The engineers of the Zuiderzeewerken Service, responsible for the construction of the Afsluitdijk and the polders of the Zuiderzee project, learned a lot from it.
