The 'Leemans' pump is one of the two pumps that drained the Wieringermeer. Level difference 5.5 meters.
In 1926, work began on the reclamation of the Wieringermeer. The 18-kilometer-long dike was completed in 1930. To pump out the Wieringermeer, two pumps were built at the end of the 1920s, namely:
pump Lely, an electric pump with three horizontal centrifugal pumps near Medemblik and
pump Leemans, a diesel pump with two vertical centrifugal pumps near Den Oever.
The choice for two different techniques, electricity and diesel, was made deliberately. In times of diesel scarcity, the Lely could take over the work, and if the electricity were to go out, the Leemans would still be ready.
